The Unholy Family

The "unholy family" consists of vampires Louis De Pointe Du Lac, his maker Lestat De Lioncourt, and their adopted daughter, Claudia. Claudia was made by Lestat for Louis after Louis rescued her from a housefire.

Unlike in Anne Rice's novels or the original movie, Louis and Lestat explicitly live together as lovers. Louis is also a Black man in this series, a stark difference from his original protrayal. The combination of his queer and Black identities shapes how he moves in Jim Crowe New Orleans.

Not much is known about Lestat's past thus far. We know that he is French, that he is wealthy, and that he came to America to look for a new start. He declared Louis to be his destiny upon meeting him.

In Season One, Lestat reveals to Louis and Claudia that he was turned by a vampire named Magnus who kidnapped and abused Lestat. He explains that because of this, he fears abandonment. Fans speculate that Lestat may have borderline personality disorder. His story will be explored more in the upcoming season.

Claudia was turned by Lestat after nearly being killed in a housefire. Louis, feeling responsible for the fire after accidentally inciting a riot, begged Lestat to save her and absolve him of his guilt. Though turned at only fourteen years old, Claudia naturally took to hunting and shared Lestat's cunning personality. As her mind grew older with her body staying fourteen, Claudia began to resent her vampiric nature. After facing traumas at the hands of Lestat and other vampires, Claudia devised a plan with Louis to kill Lestat so that they could flee New Orleans for Europe.

Lestat and Claudia's relationship is often compared to that of a mother and daughter. Their many scenes of playing chess together foreshadow how Claudia uses Lestat's own tricks against him, leading him to his demise.
